If I were altering them width wise without affecting the selvedge then the only way to do that would be to undo the inside leg stitching right up to the groin and and make it narrower that way by bringing the hem inwards. The main problem you will encounter when you do this is that the leg will taper downwards and make the jeans look a bit silly because the overall width at the top of the jeans around the hips and seat will remain the same.
The cheapest way to reduce the overall width would be to simply wash them in a very hot wash then immediately dry them in the tumble dryer, the whole of the jeans will shrink in proportion and be a slimmer fit anyway, but of course the waist might be too slim then as well.

i also heard about putting the jeans inside out, and laying them the length of your bath tub in hot water. Then hanging them to air dry. They'll shrink and you dont lose much colour or shape compared to the washer and dryer.
any one else on this?
never done it myself

Yeah leaving them in a bath to soak will certainly shrink the jeans slightly, every aspect of the size will reduce including the width of the leg, but it might only be very slight, its mainly the waist and leg length that alter significantly, of course the result depends on how hot the water is and of course if you simply line dry or tumble dry at high temperatures afterwards.

How much would you say they would shrink in the washer/dryer? Would a size 38 shrink to a 37, (less/more?)

not alot of indigo was lost in the process since its only 1 wash. Your waist patch will get all crumpled and stiff cause it's leather and it does go well with dryer.
